Mindy Kaling: A developing talent

I run hot and cold on The Office, but I've always really loved the character of Kelly, the uber-perky, man-hungry customer service rep. What I hadn't realized is that Mindy Kaling, who plays Kelly, is also one of the show's writers. And now she's signed a deal with NBC to develop a new comedy for her to star in.

"I've always wanted to do another show about women," said Kaling, whose past credits include writing the WB pilot "Mindy and Brenda," along with Brenda Withers, for Carsey-Werner and Steve Martin. That project was about two female best friends straight out of college.

This is great news! The more women developing comedies behind the scenes, the more opportunities there will be for women in other roles, including producing, directing, and writing, as well as performing.
