Nice to see a bit of good news for a change.
African-American Female Comics to Host New TV Shows (Stage Time Magazine)
And, yes, the success rate for new TV shows is extremely low. But the more they start with, the better the odds that at least one will take off. Right?
I thought she was pretty funny in general, but really loved this one:
"He can't take a waterboarding. I can break Sean Hannity just by giving him a middle seat in coach!"
(Oh, and that tall skinny guy that was on before her was pretty funny too...)
I run hot and cold on The Office, but I've always really loved the character of Kelly, the uber-perky, man-hungry customer service rep. What I hadn't realized is that Mindy Kaling, who plays Kelly, is also one of the show's writers. And now she's signed a deal with NBC to develop a new comedy for her to star in.
"I've always wanted to do another show about women," said Kaling, whose past credits include writing the WB pilot "Mindy and Brenda," along with Brenda Withers, for Carsey-Werner and Steve Martin. That project was about two female best friends straight out of college.

This is great news! The more women developing comedies behind the scenes, the more opportunities there will be for women in other roles, including producing, directing, and writing, as well as performing.
... we're not alone.
Sexism in TV casting so rife it's comical, say funnywomen (The Age)
Okay, well, actually it's the return of Debra Messing to the world of sitcoms.
(Am I the only one that didn't realize that The Starter Wife wasn't coming back?)
NBC Picks Up Debra Messing Comedy Pilot (seattlepi.com)
I'm sure this movie will bring people in with the Tina Fey/Steve Carell pairing. But I have to say the bigger draw for me will be Kristen Wiig. I've never seen her on SNL, so can't respond to the anti-Wiig comments following the story below, but I thought she was just hilarious in Knocked Up as Katherine Heigl's passive/aggressive co-worker.
'Date Night': Could the comedy's cast get any better?! (Entertainment Weekly)
I wasn't a big fan of Sykes until I saw this clip of her on Jay Leno last fall, discussing the Wall Street bailout. I especially loved her line about oversight.
She seems to be on a roll now, and dealing with one of the tougher challenges comics are facing these days.

... it wasn't such an accurate reflection of most women's magazines's coverage of, well, you know...
"The accomplished physician humbly accepted medicine's highest honor before a crowd of her peers, and spoke about the importance of regular screenings to prevent unnecessary complications up inside one's business."
Renowned Hoo-Ha Doctor Wins Nobel Prize For Medical Advancements Down There (The Onion)
She obviously understood the realities of life for the freelance writer. To wit:
"I'd like to have money. And I'd like to be a good writer. These two can come together, and I hope they will, but if that's too adorable, I'd rather have money."
